Here are some photos of Albufeira and
the Algarve in Portugal
which were submitted by Jo. A big thanks to Jo for submitting
her Albufeira photos! - here is Jo's Albufeira review and review of the
Duas Palmeras apartments:
We
stayed at the Duas Palmeras apartments in Albuefira in August 2006. I
had heard really nice things about these apartments prior to going,
however it seems there are two or three separate apartment blocks. Maybe
the main block is ok - but unfortunately the block which we stayed in
was mostly a Portuguese residential block. From what we could tell it
looked like Sunset only had three of the apartments in this particular
block and the rest were residential. On the plus side, this meant that
we more or less had the pool to ourselves during the week, however it
was clear that the apartments had been built to be residential as
opposed to catering for holidaymakers. For instance, there is no pool
bar or snack bar - there is no mini market or shop like you normally get
- and you had to walk through the dark basement car park to get to the
pool! - It was really dark and dingy and a bit stinky!
The
apartments themselves could be really good, but were in dire need
of a good clean up and a lick of paint. It was a real shame as the
apartments were massive, but they just hadn't been looked after. The
bathroom was pretty dirty (see the photo of the shower - that's rust or
something on the base - and the toilet was worse) and most of the
furniture was falling apart (see the photos of the comedy drawers!).
The
brochure did say you can use the pool at the sister Eirasol apartments
(as it does have a pool bar) but it's probably a good 10 minutes walk
between the two. There were only 7 or 8 sun-loungers - and although
there was a room by the pool with more in it - it was locked for the who
two weeks we were there, which was handy. Overall I was disappointed
with the apartments - I really feel we should have been warned
that we would be staying in a residential block. Although its sometimes
nice to have the pool to yourself, part of the fun of being round the
pool is meeting new people and having a bit of a chat or even just
people watching! - but there was no-one else there!
We enjoyed Albuefira
itself. New Albufeira has a main 'strip' which is 1.5Km long and full of
bars and restaurants. Obviously there is plenty to choose from, so there
is something to suit everyone really. We really liked the Ancora bar,
and higher up the strip was Sinatra's bar (they sell cans of Carling
which made a nice change from dodgy lager!) - as I say though, there is
something to suit everyone. Old Albufeira is a must though - it's
quieter and a bit more quaint than 'the strip' and again has some really
nice bars and restaurants. There are lots of stalls for good shopping
too.
A good day out
is Zoomarine - I've included some photos of the dolphin show. Overall it
was a good day out, but as usual with these type of places, you seem to
spend a lot of your time queuing.
Overall it was a nice
holiday, although I'd probably stay in Old Albufeira if I go back. Also,
just to forewarn that all the rumours of the paths being slippy are
true! - all of the paths are made up of smashed up marble or something
and even when they are dry, you often go skating, so make sure you take
flat shoes!
