Here are some photos of Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria. Of all the places I've been, Puerto Rico has to be one of my favourites. To me it has everything, great nightlife, really hot weather and superb scenery. We have been three times and really enjoyed it every time. The first visit was in October 1997 when we stayed in the Halley Apartments - it was still red hot in October (still in the late 80's and early 90's). We then went back in 1999 and stayed at the Canima Apartments and we have just got back from staying at the Cala D'or apartments in August 2005. The nightlife in Puerto Rico is great and has a good fun and friendly atmosphere.
As I say, on our first visit in October 1997 and we stayed in the Halley Apartments which were excellent. They were really clean and each balcony had a view over the Marina. It was so relaxing sitting on the balcony and reading a book as the sun went down. They were small and family run (only around 30 something apartments) and it was a short taxi ride into the Commercial Centre. We went back to Puerto Rico in 1999 and stayed in the Canima Apartments which were pretty good too. The pool bar was run by "Mr Shitty" who was a bit eccentric to say the least! Our latest visit was to the Cala D'or apartments which are fantastic. If you have kids, this is probably a great place to go. There is entertainment on each day and night except Mondays and the entertainment is run by Dave from Middlesbrough. The kids loved him - he teaches them dances such as the Macarena, Superman, Mimic Man, that kind of thing - and if they learn four dances by the end of their stay they get a medal and diploma from him. During the day Dave runs a killer pool tournament and a water polo match (for adults too!) On an evening, there is normally a short quiz, a game of bingo, some dancing for the kids and then an act (the hypnotist was particularly good). The apartments themselves were great too, they were extremely clean - in fact if you left dishes in the sink, the cleaners even did them for you! You can walk to the commercial centre from the Cala D'or but I counted 187 stairs! - they're not bad on the way down but a nightmare back up! - I'd recommend you get a taxi back up - it's only around 3 euros. The taxis in fact are really good value. You can pretty much get to anywhere in Puerto Rico for around 5 euros. The beach at Puerto Rico gets really busy at times and because of this it has been given the nickname of "Sardine's Beach", however for a 5 euro taxi ride you can pop along to the Amadores beach. The Amadores is a man made beach which is made up of sand and crushed coral. The idea of the crushed coral is to keep it cool on your feet, but it was still red hot when we were there! At the Amadores beach there are numerous shops and bars along the edge of the beach - one worth a particular mention is The London Pride. They do great breakfasts and snacks at reasonable prices. There are two main areas of nightlife in Puerto Rico - you have the Commercial Centre which is the more lively part and then there is the Europa Centre (or top of the hill) which has quieter bars (some with live acts) and shops and plenty of restaurants. There are loads of good bars in the commercial centre but some of our favourites were probably Tropicana, Lineker's bar, Snoopy's, Garage and Piccadilly. For a good night out at the Europa centre I would recommend the Barbacoa. The Barbacoa has three acts each night and also does meals up to 10pm. We saw some good acts there such as the Drifters, Elvis and a Showaddywaddy tribute group. A good trip out is the Aqualand water park in Maspalomas. We went in August 2005 - we got the taxi there from Puerto Rico and is cost us 20 euros and entry in to the park was 21 euros for adults. It was a really good day out with some excellent slides. They have one called the Tornado which you go down on a big ring and it's basically like being flushed down a toilet! - the only downside for us was that they had three power cuts on the day we were there so we lost about two hours where we couldn't use a lot of the slides - hopefully we were just unlucky though and we still enjoyed the day anyway. We also visited the market in Port Mogan which was huge (there are some photos above). Again this was about 20 euros in a taxi from Puerto Rico. It was another good day out and the market goes around a marina which is filled with loads of yachts (so you can see how the other half live!) As you can see from these Puerto Rico photos, it is a stunning place, but I have to agree with the brochures when they warn about the hills and steps though. They really are steep so I wouldn't recommend them for the less mobile, but then again, taxis are plentiful and reasonably priced. Search the web: Here is a weather forecast for Gran Canaria:
